The Official Cash Rate (OCR) was left at 1.75%, as widely expected, and the RBNZ expects to keep the OCR at this level through 2019 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201cThe direction of our next OCR move could be up or down.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Governor Adrian Orr has downplayed the odds of a rate cut but has not entirely removed it off the table. Given the global risks and uncertainties, the chance of a rate cut is not eliminated but has not increased either.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NZDUSD<\/strong> jumped on the signals to hold on to rates though to 2020 while the <strong>AUDNZD<\/strong> dropped by almost the same extent. We saw movements above 100 pips following the Rate Statement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-86575 size-large\" title=\"Reserve Bank of New Zealand dovish\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-2-1024x376.png\" alt=\"Reserve Bank of New Zealand dovish\" width=\"1024\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-2-1024x376.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-2-300x110.png 300w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-2-768x282.png 768w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-2-600x220.png 600w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-2.png 1454w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>AUDUSD,<\/strong> which is highly correlated with the NZDUSD, added a few pips and built on gains from the uptick in the Westpac Consumer Confidence released before the RBNZ\u2019s interest rate decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-86576 size-large\" title=\"RBNZ\u2019s interest rate\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-3-1024x391.png\" alt=\"RBNZ\u2019s interest rate\" width=\"1024\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-3-1024x391.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-3-300x115.png 300w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-3-768x293.png 768w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-3-600x229.png 600w, https:\/\/www.gomarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Image-13-02-2019-3.png 1456w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The RBNZ strikes a \u201cdata-dependent\u201d approach and says that they are comfortable with the inflation target and mid-point pressures. The Governor stretched that \u201c<em>they need data from the financial markets around how they are pricing and seeing the risks as well.\u201d <\/em>When asked about the rise in unemployment, Orr mentioned that \u201c<em>the surveys are not reflecting what we hear about the business tables\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>and that\u00a0<em>\u201cemployment is near its maximum sustainable level&#8221;.\u00a0<\/em>Overall, the big picture here is that the RBNZ appears more confident that other central banks on its outlook for the New Zealand economy.
